Making wide and shallow platters can be a big challenge. Not only do you have to handle a lot og clay but the wide and shallow form makes more likelu to flop or collapse.
In this video I will show you all about how I make side shallow platters - from the clay I use, how I center it, open the clay ball and make the final shaping.

    Do you find that the edges lift a bit on drying and firing?

      Depends on the clay and how you dry it but generally yes, edges do raise a bit. But with very grogged clay and slow drying much less so

    Thanks for the stoneware grog advice. I've been throwing with normal porcelain and consistently experiencing collapsed rims on my platters. Tooling the inside is also no shame IMO.

    Excellent, thank you Mikkel. It is hard work centering a large piece of clay, I’ve not achieved success with large pieces yet….I admit I found myself holding my breath when you were but at least you had something impressive to show for it. ❤🇬🇧

    Thanks for another good video, Im moving up in clay weight but not up to 22lb yet. I liked the 3 steps you explained it well and once class starts again i will give it ago, the shape of the bowl is very nice. Lets hope this nice weather carries on, its still hit and miss in the UK so keeping fingers crossed, makes handling clay somewhat difficult, till the next video.,

    Neat! I didnt know you could stack lumps of clay on top of the first one, but it doesn't seem to leave any weak points once the bowl was finished ! Will you be sharing the trimming/glazing firing of this piece? I bet it will look great!

      Many of the other big pots, in videos here on my channel, is made the same way. I never had any problems with centering this way :-) This one is already trimmed, and did not do video of that. But check some of the other big bowl videos here. It's basically the same.

      It wasent too bad. I had worked with stiffer clay. Its harder to center but easier to shape :-)

    Excellent instructional style! Thank you for such clear explanations. I'm wondering about what look likes holes on the exterior wall of the bowl @ 52:30. did you use a sponge to smooth them out?

      Thanks 🙏 Its not actual holes. Just some uneven carving. I soothed it a bit but for the kind of glaze I use its actually fine with some scratches like that. It just ads some extra live to it :-)

      Thanks. I always bisque borefor glazing. The clay is a stoneware I get from a local supplier (Denmark). So unless you are here it probably won't help you much :-)

      @@deMibPottery they do, they really, really do. she came up with it after one of my brothers played with matches and set his bed on fire. He then tried to put the fire out by peeing on it. He was about six at the time needless to say after the firemen left he was a family object lesson for years.
